black keys - el camino
ok, i wasn't a huge black keys fan. brother's had a few good songs, but i couldn't really distinguish one from the other. all the radio hits sounded alike, and really i just didn't care. i was probably too busy watching film noir and smoking clove cigarettes. i digress.
on a whim, and probably whilst high (if you have an issue gtfo) i bought the black key's 'el camino'. and kids, it wasn't one of those regretful high purchases. each song is unique, or when they're not completely different they have unique flourishes. i read a review earlier and felt that the critic had been too harsh, or else i'm being too soft, but i think that the album is a solid listen to. for two guys from akron ohio, they've got that mississippi delta blues, that midwest grit and a memphis soul. perhaps one of the greatest achievements of this album is not so much the diversity of sound, but more the level of energy maintained throughout, only slowing down once for a zeppelin-esque 'stairway to heaven' interlude with a rockin' finish.
from start to finish, el camino is a contender to be one of my top albums that i've bought in the last 3 years. which is a small list, so it's not got a lot of competition, but even if it did, i think i'm more satisfied with this purchase than i have been in a long time.
as always, the quick listen:
1. gold on the ceiling
2. run right back
3. lonely boy
4. money maker
but seriously, give the whole thing a listen, i guarantee you won't be disappointed.

yelawolf - radioactive
ok. so upon first listen, i was like, 'what the fuck is this. what happened to the sweet hooks of trunk muzik 0-60?'. then i gave it another go. and another. and let me tell you, i probably know the words to all the songs now. and i love nearly every single one of them.
for those of you who don't know who the fuck yelawolf is, give your head a shake and embrace the new state of hip hop. yelawolf is from alabama, a state i hold near and dear to my heart and is a freak-- loves cars, bitches, being a redneck. he worked on a fishing boat once i read somewhere. and he spits. well.
now, if you know me, you know i have a sweet spot for hip hop. who knew, this waify hipster kid would be able to bounce to busta, blaze with cudi and roll with khalifa. but i do. i fucks with it all. and yelawolf steals my heart. not because he's white, because if rap has taught the world anything, is that white rappers happen once in a blue moon, and chances are they move on to become actors (marky mark, i'm looking at you with your sexy 80s six pack), but because he's good at what he does. and there's some nostalgic bits in there... but that's for me and monsieur hipster to know ;). ugh, i make myself ill lately. anyways. back to what's at hand: the review.
radioactive is a departure from the rock-rap trunk muzik, but not by much. it's got some fucking catchy songs, it's got some really good beats. it's got some slick hooks (slick rick e bobby in a nascar / running over motherfuckers like i'm in a bar / sentimental motherfuckers in a cookie jar / beat a late night snack, i'm a santa claus / down to panama beach drunk in my underalls / playin underwear volleyball with your bra / i ain't bothered by your triple d/s not at all / let me hold em up for ya baby when you walk - animal ft fefe dobson) and some good lyrics. it's... different. there's no identifiable single aside from 'hard white (up in the club)' ft lil john, but the whole cd is a good listen. if you're ready to push the envelope of hip hop, and are tired of jay and ye rapping about decadence, ti being unintelligble and the game and fiddy being old and outdated, head on over to yelawolf and take him for a spin. you'll like it, i promise.
quick listen:
animal ft fefe dobson
everything i love the most
whip it
good girl ft poo bear
shlumerican shitizen ft killer mike

blue christmas playlist
this is still a failure. i can't even begin to think about christmas songs right now. it's fucking january. get a grip. maybe next year i'll get a jump on it. or maybe i'll be in nyny with monsieur hipster not giving a flying fuck about christmas and eating delicious eggplant parm made my mama italliano.
i know i'm missing more things. i know. i'll have to read through the posts and see where else i'm failing. i wanted to get this all done while i had time because this semester is proving to be an ass raper. when are they not.
